Starting or joining a group

Dashboard, and My Groups

  1. Create one

    On your dashboard, give the group a name and, if you like, what it is for, a grade and a country. Tick List in Group Discovery if other students may find it and ask to join.

  2. Or join one

    Type a group's 6-character code to join at once. Accept an invitation when a member invites you. Or browse Discover Groups and ask to join; the owner lets you in.

  3. Bring friends in

    Any member can press Invite peers and invite someone by name. They get a notice to accept or decline.

Sharing in a group

  • Press Share to group on a problem, quiz, lab, note, test, course or discussion. The button shows once you are in a group.
  • Share a link to anything off the site. YouTube and Vimeo videos play inside the group.
  • The group has its own discussion. Only members can read and write in it.
  • Other members get a notice when something is shared or posted. Recent Activity on the group page shows it all in one list.

Challenges

A challenge turns a test someone shared into a race between the members.

  1. Share a test

    A published mock test or question set, or a practice test someone built.

  2. Make it a challenge

    On the shared test, press Make it a challenge, set a deadline if you want one, and press Create Challenge. Every member is told.

  3. Take the test

    Each member takes it in their own time. Your best attempt counts, so a retry can only help. Everyone is told when a member submits.

  4. The deadline

    About a day before it, members who have not taken it get a reminder. Attempts after the deadline do not count. When it passes, every member is told who won.

With more than one challenge, Overall Standings counts each member's medals and average across all of them. Past challenges fold away under their own heading, with a search box once there are many.

Medals and your trophy case

The top three in a closed challenge win gold, silver and bronze. Your medals from every group are under Group Achievements on your dashboard. Only you see this. Medals stay even if you leave the group.

Running a group

The person who creates a group is its owner. The owner can:

  • let in, or decline, students who asked to join from Discover Groups;
  • remove a member (they are told);
  • hand the group to another member with Make Owner (they are asked first, and everyone is told);
  • ask for the group to be deleted (an admin reviews it, and every member is told).

A member who is not the owner can Leave at any time. The owner hands the group on, or asks to delete it, instead of leaving.

Privacy and safety

A group's discussion and shared items are for its members. Moderators can read a group to act on a report, and a reported item can be removed.

Tip

Keep personal details (phone numbers, addresses) out of group posts. Use Report under anything that should not be there.
