Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
The thiocyanate ion, , has the atoms in the order S, C, N and valence electrons. Three structures are (two lone pairs on S and on N), (three lone pairs on S, one on N) and (one lone pair on S, three on N). Find the formal charge on nitrogen in the first, and the sum of the sizes of the charges in the third. Which structure is best?
Formal charge . The best structure has the smallest formal charges, puts a negative charge on the most electronegative atom, and has no like charges side by side. Only atoms from period 3 down can hold more than eight electrons.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. . S: . C: . N: . Sum of sizes: .
Step 2. . S: . C: . N: . Sum of sizes: .
Step 3. . S: . C: . N: . Sum of sizes: .
Step 4. Choose. The first two tie. Nitrogen is more electronegative than sulfur, so is the best. In practice both of the first two contribute.
Answer: ; a sum of ; is best.
