Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Sunita says India can feed its growing population by clearing more forest for farms. Give two reasons why raising the yield from each hectare is a better answer.
A variety is a kind of crop with its own traits. Breeders make better ones by hybridisation (intervarietal, interspecific or intergeneric) or by genetic modification. They aim for a higher yield, better quality, resistance to biotic and abiotic stress, a shorter time to ripen, wider adaptability and a useful plant shape. Kharif crops are sown in June and rabi crops in winter.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Land is limited. Towns, roads and factories already take land, so there is not much more that can be farmed.
Step 2. Other harm. Clearing forest destroys the homes of wild animals and harms the soil and the water.
Step 3. The better answer. Better varieties, enough water and nutrients, and care of the crop raise the yield on the land we already farm.
Answer: land is limited and clearing it does harm, so the yield from each hectare must be raised.
