Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Name the aim of the breeder in each case. (a) A rice variety ripens in 95 days instead of 130. (b) A wheat variety makes bread that rises well. (c) A cotton variety survives a long dry spell. (d) A fodder grass grows tall with many branches.
A variety is a kind of crop with its own traits. Breeders make better ones by hybridisation (intervarietal, interspecific or intergeneric) or by genetic modification. They aim for a higher yield, better quality, resistance to biotic and abiotic stress, a shorter time to ripen, wider adaptability and a useful plant shape. Kharif crops are sown in June and rabi crops in winter.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) A shorter time to ripen. The farmer can grow more crops in a year.
Step 2. (b) Better quality, here the baking quality of wheat.
Step 3. (c) Resistance to abiotic stress, here drought.
Step 4. (d) A useful plant shape. Tallness and many branches are good in a fodder crop.
Answer: (a) a shorter time to ripen, (b) better quality, (c) resistance to abiotic stress, (d) a useful plant shape.
