A brief note on Work and Its Measurement . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas Work is done when a force moves an object along (or against) the force. No movement, no work. W = F × s W = F \times s W = F × s , in joules: 1 J = 1 N × 1 m 1\ \text{J} = 1\ \text{N} \times 1\ \text{m} 1 J = 1 N × 1 m , and 1 kJ = 1000 J 1\ \text{kJ} = 1000\ \text{J} 1 kJ = 1000 J . On a graph of force against distance, the work is the area under the line. The work is positive when the force is along the motion, negative when it is against it, and zero at right angles. Lifting at a steady speed: W = m g h W = mgh W = m g h . Only the height counts, not the path. Pulling along level ground at a steady speed: W = f × s W = f \times s W = f × s , with f f f the friction. The facts at a glance Force and movement Work done by the force Same direction Positive, + F s +Fs + F s Opposite directions Negative, − F s -Fs − F s At right angles Zero No movement Zero
Job Work A steady push F F F over s s s W = F s W = Fs W = F s Lifting m m m through h h h W = m g h W = mgh W = m g h Pulling against friction f f f over s s s W = f s W = fs W = f s
A worked example A girl pushes a 9 kg 9\ \text{kg} 9 kg suitcase up a smooth ramp 3 m 3\ \text{m} 3 m long onto a stage 0.6 m 0.6\ \text{m} 0.6 m high, then slides it 4 m 4\ \text{m} 4 m across the stage against a friction force of 20 N 20\ \text{N} 20 N .
Up the ramp. Against gravity only the height counts: 9 kg × 9.8 m/s 2 × 0.6 m = 52.9 J 9\ \text{kg} \times 9.8\ \text{m/s}^2 \times 0.6\ \text{m} = 52.9\ \text{J} 9 kg × 9.8 m/s 2 × 0.6 m = 52.9 J . Across the stage. 20 N × 4 m = 80 J 20\ \text{N} \times 4\ \text{m} = 80\ \text{J} 20 N × 4 m = 80 J . In all. 52.9 J + 80 J = 132.9 J 52.9\ \text{J} + 80\ \text{J} = 132.9\ \text{J} 52.9 J + 80 J = 132.9 J . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program adds up the work of a day's jobs.
Read it, then run it.
Add a job: lifting a 12 kg 12\ \text{kg} 12 kg bag 1.5 m 1.5\ \text{m} 1.5 m . How much does the total grow?
Mistakes to avoid Using the mass as the force. Change kilograms to newtons with m g mg m g first. Counting sideways walking as work on a load you carry. Your force on it is up; the motion is sideways. Forgetting the sign. Friction and brakes do negative work. Using the length of a ramp as the height. Use the vertical height for m g h mgh m g h .
