A brief note on Conservation of Energy and Power . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas Energy is never made or destroyed ; it only changes form. In a fall with no air, the potential energy lost becomes kinetic energy: v = 2 g h v = \sqrt{2gh} v = 2 g h , whatever the mass. In real life some energy becomes heat and sound, but the total is still the same. Power is the rate of doing work: P = W t P = \dfrac{W}{t} P = t W , in watts ( 1 W = 1 J/s 1\ \text{W} = 1\ \text{J/s} 1 W = 1 J/s ). Electricity is sold in kilowatt hours : 1 kWh = 3.6 × 10 6 J 1\ \text{kWh} = 3.6 \times 10^{6}\ \text{J} 1 kWh = 3.6 × 1 0 6 J , one unit on the bill. The facts at a glance To find Use Speed after a fall h h h v = 2 g h v = \sqrt{2gh} v = 2 g h Height of a throw at u u u h = u 2 2 g h = \dfrac{u^2}{2g} h = 2 g u 2 Power P = W t P = \dfrac{W}{t} P = t W Units of electricity power in kW × \times × time in h Cost units × \times × price
A worked example A pump lifts 520 kg 520\ \text{kg} 520 kg of water 10 m 10\ \text{m} 10 m in 2 2 2 minutes, twice a day, for 30 30 30 days. One unit costs ₹ 6 6 6 .
Work each time. 520 kg × 9.8 m/s 2 × 10 m = 50 960 J 520\ \text{kg} \times 9.8\ \text{m/s}^2 \times 10\ \text{m} = 50\,960\ \text{J} 520 kg × 9.8 m/s 2 × 10 m = 50 960 J . Power. 50 960 J 120 s = 425 W \dfrac{50\,960\ \text{J}}{120\ \text{s}} = 425\ \text{W} 120 s 50 960 J = 425 W . Energy in a month. 60 60 60 runs × 50 960 J = 3.06 × 10 6 J = 0.85 kWh \times 50\,960\ \text{J} = 3.06 \times 10^{6}\ \text{J} = 0.85\ \text{kWh} × 50 960 J = 3.06 × 1 0 6 J = 0.85 kWh , costing about ₹ 5.10 5.10 5.10 (if the pump wasted nothing). A program to try The program checks that the total energy stays the same as a stone falls, then finds a power.
Read it, then run it.
Make the stone heavier. Does the speed at the ground change?
Mistakes to avoid 'The energy is used up.' It changes form, often into heat. Using minutes with watts. Change the time to seconds for joules, or to hours for kWh. 'More power means more work.' It means the same work in less time. Calling a kWh a unit of power. It is a unit of energy. Check yourself A stone is dropped from 11.25 m 11.25\ \text{m} 11.25 m .
