A brief note on Kinetic and Potential Energy . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas Energy is the ability to do work, measured in joules. It has many forms and changes from one to another. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion: K E = 1 2 m v 2 KE = \tfrac{1}{2}mv^2 K E = 2 1 m v 2 . The speed is squared: twice the speed gives four times the kinetic energy. The work done on an object equals the change in its kinetic energy. Potential energy is stored energy of position or shape: P E = m g h PE = mgh P E = m g h for a height h h h . h h h is measured from a level we choose; the change in P E PE P E does not depend on that choice. The facts at a glance Change Kinetic energy Mass doubled × 2 \times 2 × 2 Speed doubled × 4 \times 4 × 4 Speed three times as large × 9 \times 9 × 9
Quantity Formula Unit Kinetic energy 1 2 m v 2 \tfrac{1}{2}mv^2 2 1 m v 2 J Potential energy m g h mgh m g h J Speed from kinetic energy v = 2 K E m v = \sqrt{\dfrac{2KE}{m}} v = m 2 K E m/s
A worked example A 70 kg 70\ \text{kg} 70 kg skier stands at the top of a slope 15 m 15\ \text{m} 15 m high, then reaches the bottom moving at 12 m/s 12\ \text{m/s} 12 m/s .
At the top. P E = 70 kg × 9.8 m/s 2 × 15 m = 10 290 J PE = 70\ \text{kg} \times 9.8\ \text{m/s}^2 \times 15\ \text{m} = 10\,290\ \text{J} P E = 70 kg × 9.8 m/s 2 × 15 m = 10 290 J , measured from the bottom. At the bottom. K E = 1 2 × 70 kg × ( 12 m/s ) 2 = 5040 J KE = \tfrac{1}{2} \times 70\ \text{kg} \times (12\ \text{m/s})^2 = 5040\ \text{J} K E = 2 1 × 70 kg × ( 12 m/s ) 2 = 5040 J . So about half the potential energy became kinetic energy; the rest went into heat from the snow and the air. Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program finds the kinetic and potential energy of a stone at several points.
Read it, then run it.
Double the speed at every point. Which column changes, and by how much?
Mistakes to avoid Forgetting the half in 1 2 m v 2 \tfrac{1}{2}mv^2 2 1 m v 2 , or forgetting to square the speed. Thinking only moving things have energy. A stone on a roof has potential energy. Using km/h in 1 2 m v 2 \tfrac{1}{2}mv^2 2 1 m v 2 . Change to m/s first: divide by 3.6 3.6 3.6 . Arguing about the 'right' reference level. Any level works; only changes of P E PE P E matter.
