By the end of the 1700s, careful weighing showed five rules. Mass is never lost in a reaction. A compound always has the same make-up by mass. Two elements that form several compounds do so in simple whole-number ratios. Gases react in simple ratios of volume. Equal volumes of gases hold equal numbers of molecules.
Dalton explained the laws with atoms that have fixed masses. Atomic masses are measured in atomic mass units: one u is one twelfth of the mass of a carbon-12 atom. Most elements are mixtures of isotopes, so their atomic mass is a weighted average. Adding atomic masses gives molecular mass and formula mass.
A mole is particles, the Avogadro constant. The molar mass of a substance, in grams per mole, has the same number as its molecular or formula mass in u. Moles join mass and particles: and .
