Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Which of these are redox reactions? Give the reason for each.
Oxidation is a gain of oxygen or a loss of hydrogen; reduction is a loss of oxygen or a gain of hydrogen. They happen together. The oxidising agent gives oxygen (or takes hydrogen) and is itself reduced; the reducing agent takes oxygen (or gives hydrogen) and is itself oxidised.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) Carbon gains oxygen: redox.
Step 2. (b) Nothing gains or loses oxygen or hydrogen: not redox.
Step 3. (c) Zinc oxide loses oxygen and carbon gains it: redox.
Answer: (a) and (c).
