Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Name the oxidising agent and the reducing agent in each.
Oxidation is a gain of oxygen or a loss of hydrogen; reduction is a loss of oxygen or a gain of hydrogen. They happen together. The oxidising agent gives oxygen (or takes hydrogen) and is itself reduced; the reducing agent takes oxygen (or gives hydrogen) and is itself oxidised.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) gives its oxygen to carbon: it is the oxidising agent. Carbon takes the oxygen: it is the reducing agent.
Step 2. (b) loses its hydrogen, so it is oxidised: it is the reducing agent. loses its oxygen, so it is reduced: it is the oxidising agent.
Answer: (a) and C. (b) and .
