Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Two atoms of the second period come together, and each brings its , and three orbitals. How many molecular orbitals form in all? How many of them are bonding, and how many are pi orbitals?
Atomic orbitals of two atoms combine into the same number of molecular orbitals: bonding ones, lower in energy, and antibonding ones (starred), higher in energy. They must have similar energies and the same symmetry. Up to the order is , , , , , , , ; for and , comes before . Electrons fill them by the Aufbau, Pauli and Hund rules.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. All of them. Each atom has atomic orbitals, so molecular orbitals form.
Step 2. Bonding ones. Every pair gives one bonding and one antibonding orbital: bonding and antibonding.
Step 3. Pi ones. with gives and , and so does with : pi orbitals.
Answer: molecular orbitals, of them bonding and of them pi.
