Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
The molecule, found in flames and in comets, has electrons. Write its molecular orbital configuration, and count the electrons in bonding and in antibonding orbitals. Is it paramagnetic?
Atomic orbitals of two atoms combine into the same number of molecular orbitals: bonding ones, lower in energy, and antibonding ones (starred), higher in energy. They must have similar energies and the same symmetry. Up to the order is , , , , , , , ; for and , comes before . Electrons fill them by the Aufbau, Pauli and Hund rules.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Fill. . That uses all electrons.
Step 2. Count. Bonding: , , , , so . Antibonding: and , so .
Step 3. Magnetism. Every orbital holds a pair, so is diamagnetic.
Answer: bonding and antibonding electrons, bond order ; is diamagnetic.
