Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Bond enthalpies of carbon to carbon bonds are for , for and for . Estimate the energy of the first and of the second bond. Why is it easier to add a molecule across a double bond than to break a single bond?
The bond enthalpy is the energy to break one mole of a bond in the gas. A bond is weaker than a bond, so a double bond is less than twice as strong as a single bond.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. First bond. .
Step 2. Second bond. .
Step 3. Read it. Each bond is weaker than the bond, . An addition reaction breaks only the weaker bond and leaves the bond in place.
