At rest, Tara's body uses about kJ of energy in a day. Her brain uses about one fifth of it. (a) How much energy does her brain use in a day? (b) How much in one hour?
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
The forebrain (cerebrum) thinks and controls voluntary actions, and has the hunger centre. The medulla controls blood pressure, salivation and vomiting; the cerebellum keeps balance and posture. The skull, a fluid and the vertebral column protect the brain and the spinal cord.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Per day. kJ.
Step 2. Per hour. kJ.
Answer: (a) kJ. (b) kJ.
