After a fall, Sunil hits the back of his head. For a few days he finds it hard to walk in a straight line and to pick up small things neatly, though he can think clearly. Which part of the brain was most likely affected? Explain.
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
The forebrain (cerebrum) thinks and controls voluntary actions, and has the hunger centre. The medulla controls blood pressure, salivation and vomiting; the cerebellum keeps balance and posture. The skull, a fluid and the vertebral column protect the brain and the spinal cord.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The place. The cerebellum lies at the back of the brain, in the hindbrain.
Step 2. Its job. The cerebellum keeps balance and posture, and makes voluntary actions precise.
Step 3. The clue. He can still think, so his cerebrum works. Only his balance and precise movements suffer.
Answer: the cerebellum.
