A cricket ball hits a batter's helmet hard. Name three ways in which the body itself protects the brain and the spinal cord from such shocks.
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
The forebrain (cerebrum) thinks and controls voluntary actions, and has the hunger centre. The medulla controls blood pressure, salivation and vomiting; the cerebellum keeps balance and posture. The skull, a fluid and the vertebral column protect the brain and the spinal cord.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The skull. The brain sits in a bony box, the cranium.
Step 2. The fluid. The brain floats in a fluid that cushions it against shocks.
Step 3. The backbone. The spinal cord runs inside the vertebral column.
Answer: the skull, the fluid around the brain, and the vertebral column.
