Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Name the volume or capacity in each description.
, , , , . A spirometer cannot show the residual volume, because that air stays in the lungs.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) Tidal volume (TV).
Step 2. (b) Expiratory reserve volume (ERV).
Step 3. (c) Functional residual capacity (FRC), which is ERV + RV.
Step 4. (d) Residual volume (RV).
Step 5. (e) Vital capacity (VC).
Answer: (a) TV; (b) ERV; (c) FRC; (d) RV; (e) VC.
Watch out. After a normal expiration the lungs still hold the ERV and the RV. After a forceful expiration only the RV is left.
