Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Name the cropping pattern and give one advantage of each. (a) A farmer scatters wheat and mustard seeds together over the same field. (b) A farmer grows six rows of maize, then six rows of soyabean, then six rows of maize again. (c) A field grows groundnut in the kharif season, then wheat in the rabi season, then groundnut again.
A plant needs 16 nutrients: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen from air and water, and 13 from the soil (6 macronutrients and 7 micronutrients). Manure adds organic matter. Fertilisers give nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Wells, canals, river lift systems and tanks bring water. The cropping patterns are mixed cropping, inter-cropping and crop rotation.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) The crops are grown together with no fixed pattern. It is mixed cropping. If one crop fails, the other may still give a harvest.
Step 2. (b) The crops grow together in rows in a definite pattern. It is inter-cropping. The crops use different nutrients, and a pest of one does not spread to every plant.
Step 3. (c) Different crops follow each other in a planned order. It is crop rotation. The soil is used in different ways, and a farmer can grow more than one crop in a year.
Answer: (a) mixed cropping, (b) inter-cropping, (c) crop rotation.
