At rest, 5000 mL of blood passes the tissues in a minute…

StemPy LabContributed by StemPy Lab

Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

At rest, 500050005000 mL of blood passes the tissues in a minute. Each 100100100 mL of the blood takes up 444 mL of carbon dioxide and delivers it to the alveoli.

  1. How much carbon dioxide is delivered in a minute?
  1. How much is delivered in 101010 minutes, in litres?

Check your answer

Work it out on paper, then type your number. The answer itself stays hidden.

Carbon dioxide travels about 707070 per cent as bicarbonate, 202020 to 252525 per cent as carbamino-haemoglobin and about 777 per cent dissolved. Carbonic anhydrase of the red blood cells makes CO2+H2O⇌H2CO3⇌HCO3−+H+\text{CO}_2 + \text{H}_2\text{O} \rightleftharpoons \text{H}_2\text{CO}_3 \rightleftharpoons \text{HCO}_3^- + \text{H}^+CO2+H2O⇌H2CO3⇌HCO3−+H+ go forward in the tissues and backward in the alveoli. Each 100100100 mL of deoxygenated blood delivers about 444 mL of carbon dioxide.

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

Given. Flow: 500050005000 mL a minute. Carbon dioxide: 444 mL for each 100100100 mL.

Plan. Count the lots of 100100100 mL, multiply by 444 mL, and scale to 101010 minutes.

Step 1. One minute. 5000100×4=200\dfrac{5000}{100} \times 4 = 2001005000×4=200 mL.

Step 2. Ten minutes. 200×10=2000200 \times 10 = 2000200×10=2000 mL, which is 222 L.

Answer: 200200200 mL a minute and 222 L in 101010 minutes.

Check. This is a little less than the 250250250 mL of oxygen delivered in a minute at rest.
