Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A long solenoid of radius cm has turns in each metre. A coil of turns and radius cm sits inside it, on the same axis. Find the mutual inductance of the pair. The current in the solenoid changes at A/s. What is the emf in the coil? Then the coil is replaced by one of the same turns and a radius of cm, wound round the outside of the solenoid. What is the mutual inductance now?
For two coils, and . A coil of turns and radius inside a long solenoid of turns in each metre has , as long as the coil is no wider than the solenoid. Also , and in series . The energy stored is , and each cubic metre of field holds .
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The first coil. . That is µH.
Step 2. The emf. , that is mV.
Step 3. The wider coil. The field is zero outside the solenoid. So the flux through the coil uses the area of the solenoid, with m, not the area of the coil. . That is µH.
Answer: µH, mV and µH.
Watch out. A bigger coil does not collect more flux. Using cm would give the wrong value of about µH.
