Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A co-operative stores tonnes of rice for months. In an untreated store, of the rice that is left is lost each month. In a store that is cleaned, dried and fumigated, is lost each month. How much rice is left in each store at the end, and how much does the treatment save?
Weeds, insect pests and diseases lower the yield. Pesticides (herbicides, insecticides and fungicides) work but are poisonous. Safer methods are good field preparation, timely sowing, inter-cropping, crop rotation, resistant varieties and summer ploughing. Stored grain is lost to biotic and abiotic causes and is protected by cleaning, drying and fumigating.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Untreated. tonnes.
Step 2. Treated. tonnes.
Step 3. Saved. tonnes.
Answer: tonnes are left in the untreated store and tonnes in the treated store, so the treatment saves tonnes.
