Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A closed box measures m along , m along and m along . A uniform field of N/C points along . Find the flux through the face that the field enters, the flux through the face that the field leaves, and the net flux through the whole box.
The flux through a flat surface in a uniform field is , with the angle between the field and the normal to the surface. For a closed surface the normal points outward: lines that leave count as positive and lines that enter as negative. In a uniform field the net flux through a closed surface is zero.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Plan. Two faces are at right angles to the field. The other four lie along it.
Step 1. The area of those two faces. .
Step 2. The face that the field enters. The outward normal points along , so . .
Step 3. The face that the field leaves. The outward normal points along , so . .
Step 4. The other four faces. The field runs along them. Each has and zero flux.
Step 5. The net flux. .
Answer: , and .
Check. The box holds no charge, so Gauss's law needs a net flux of zero. It fits.
