Torque, Moment of Inertia and Rotation About a Fixed Axis: Quick Revision
The vector product, torque and the moment arm, moments of inertia of common shapes, the parallel and perpendicular axis theorems, and the law of rotation with energy, work and power, with the usual slips and questions to check yourself.
A brief note on Torque, Moment of Inertia and Rotation About a Fixed Axis. Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas
Vector product: ∣A×B∣=ABsinθ, at right angles to both; A×B=−B×A.
Torque: τ=r×F, size rFsinθ = force times moment arm.
Moment of inertia: I=∑miri2; mass far from the axis counts most.
Axis theorems: I=Icm+Md2; for flat bodies Iz=Ix+Iy.
Law of rotation: τ=Iα; energy 21Iω2; work τθ; power τω.

A worked example
A steady torque of 3.0N m acts on a solid disc of mass 8.0kg and radius 0.25m, from rest.
Moment of inertia.I=21×8.0kg×(0.25m)2=0.25kg m2.
Angular acceleration.α=0.25kgm23.0Nm=12rad/s2.
After 4.0s.ω=48rad/s and K=21×0.25kgm2×(48rad/s)2=288J, which equals the torque's work, τθ=3.0Nm×96rad.
Practice with new numbers
A program to try
The program spins up the disc of the worked example.
Mistakes to avoid
cos instead of sin in rFsinθ. The part of the force along the arm gives no torque.
MR2 for a disc. That is a ring.
The parallel axis theorem from a non-central axis. Start from the centre of mass.
The tension equal to the weight when a load accelerates.
Degrees or turns in τθ. Use radians.
Check yourself
