A brief note on Resistance and Combinations of Resistors . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas R = ρ L A R = \rho\,\dfrac{L}{A} R = ρ A L : longer means more resistance, thicker means less. The resistivity ρ \rho ρ depends only on the material and the temperature. Series : one path; the same current; the voltages add; R s = R 1 + R 2 + … R_s = R_1 + R_2 + \dots R s = R 1 + R 2 + … , larger than the largest. Parallel : many paths; the same voltage; the currents add; 1 R p = 1 R 1 + 1 R 2 + … \dfrac{1}{R_p} = \dfrac{1}{R_1} + \dfrac{1}{R_2} + \dots R p 1 = R 1 1 + R 2 1 + … , smaller than the smallest. Mixed circuits : solve each parallel group first, then add the series parts. Homes are wired in parallel : full voltage for each, separate switches. The facts at a glance Series Parallel Current Same everywhere Splits; the branches add up Potential difference Shared out Same across each Combined resistance Sum; larger than the largest Less than the smallest One part fails All stop The others go on
Material Resistivity ( Ω m \Omega\,\text{m} Ω m ) Used for Copper 1.7 × 10 − 8 1.7 \times 10^{-8} 1.7 × 1 0 − 8 Wires Tungsten 5.6 × 10 − 8 5.6 \times 10^{-8} 5.6 × 1 0 − 8 Bulb filaments Nichrome 1.1 × 10 − 6 1.1 \times 10^{-6} 1.1 × 1 0 − 6 Heater elements
A worked example A 14 Ω 14\ \Omega 14 Ω and a 35 Ω 35\ \Omega 35 Ω resistor are in parallel, and the pair is in series with 6 Ω 6\ \Omega 6 Ω , on a 20 V 20\ \text{V} 20 V battery. Find the current from the battery.
The pair. 14 Ω × 35 Ω 14 Ω + 35 Ω = 10 Ω \dfrac{14\ \Omega \times 35\ \Omega}{14\ \Omega + 35\ \Omega} = 10\ \Omega 14 Ω + 35 Ω 14 Ω × 35 Ω = 10 Ω . The total. 10 Ω + 6 Ω = 16 Ω 10\ \Omega + 6\ \Omega = 16\ \Omega 10 Ω + 6 Ω = 16 Ω . The current. I = 20 V 16 Ω = 1.25 A I = \dfrac{20\ \text{V}}{16\ \Omega} = 1.25\ \text{A} I = 16 Ω 20 V = 1.25 A . A program to try The program finds the series and the parallel resistance of any list of resistors.
Read it, then run it. Which total is larger?
1. Add a resistor of 100 Ω 100\ \Omega 100 Ω . Which total changes a lot, and which hardly at all?
Mistakes to avoid Adding resistances that are in parallel. Only series resistances add. Forgetting to turn 1 R p \dfrac{1}{R_p} R p 1 upside down at the end. Using square millimetres in R = ρ L A R = \rho\dfrac{L}{A} R = ρ A L . Use square metres. 'Resistivity changes with length.' Resistance does; resistivity does not. Check yourself A wire 3 m 3\ \text{m} 3 m long has 2.5 Ω 2.5\ \Omega 2.5 Ω . What is the resistance of 4.5 m 4.5\ \text{m} 4.5 m of the same wire? Stuck?
