Ohm's law, resistors in series and in parallel, Kirchhoff's rules, cells with internal resistance, the most power a battery can give, and the Wheatstone bridge. With the usual slips and questions to check yourself.

The big ideas
Ohm's law:V=IR. The resistance of a wire is R=ρAL; power is P=VI=I2R=RV2.
In series the same current flows and the resistances add. In parallel the same voltage is across every branch and the reciprocals add.
Kirchhoff: the current into a junction equals the current out; round any loop the rises and falls of potential add to zero.
A real cell:V=E−Ir. A load takes the most power when R=r.
A balanced Wheatstone bridge:QP=SR.
The facts at a glance
Series:R=R1+R2+…
Parallel:R1=R11+R21+…
Junction rule:∑Iin=∑Iout
Loop rule:∑ΔV=0
Terminal voltage:V=E−Ir
Most power to a load:R=r, Pmax=4rE2
A worked example
A cell of emf 10V and internal resistance 0.5Ω feeds a 3Ω and a 6Ω resistor in parallel. Find the current from the cell, its terminal voltage, and the current in the 3Ω resistor.
The pair.3Ω+6Ω3Ω×6Ω=2Ω.
The current.I=2Ω+0.5Ω10V=4A.
The terminal voltage.V=10V−4A×0.5Ω=8V.
The 3Ω branch.I3=3Ω8V=2.67A.
Practice with new numbers
A program to try
Mistakes to avoid
Adding resistors in parallel. The total is always smaller than the smallest branch.
Forgetting the internal resistance in I=R+rE.
Fearing a negative current. It only means the current flows against your arrow.
Taking the emf as the terminal voltage while a current flows.
