A brief note on Isotopes and Isobars . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
Isotopes and isobars Isotopes Isobars Atomic number Z Z Z same different Mass number A A A different same Element same different Chemical properties same different Example carbon-12, carbon-14 calcium-40, argon-40
The average atomic mass average = ∑ ( mass number × percentage ) 100 \displaystyle \text{average} = \frac{\sum (\text{mass number} \times \text{percentage})}{100} average = 100 ∑ ( mass number × percentage ) The average lies between the mass numbers, nearer to the more common isotope. It is rarely a whole number.
Uses of radioactive isotopes Uranium-235: fuel in nuclear reactors. Cobalt-60: treating cancer. Iodine-131: treating goitre. Carbon-14: finding the age of old wood and bone; its half-life is about 5700 5700 5700 years. Americium-241: smoke detectors. A worked example Antimony is 57 % 57\ \% 57 % antimony-121 and 43 % 43\ \% 43 % antimony-123. Find its average atomic mass.
Weight each one. 121 × 57 = 6897 121 \times 57 = 6897 121 × 57 = 6897 and 123 × 43 = 5289 123 \times 43 = 5289 123 × 43 = 5289 . Add and divide. 6897 + 5289 100 = 121.86 u \dfrac{6897 + 5289}{100} = 121.86\ \text{u} 100 6897 + 5289 = 121.86 u . Check. It is nearer to 121 u 121\ \text{u} 121 u , the more common isotope. Read it, then run it. Does it agree with the worked example?
1. Change the isotopes to europium, [(151, 48), (153, 52)]. Is the average above or below 152 u 152\ \text{u} 152 u ?
Mistakes to avoid Mixing up isotopes and isobars. Isotopes share Z Z Z ; isobars share A A A . Taking a plain average instead of weighting by the percentages. Thinking that every isotope is radioactive. Most are stable. Thinking that a radioactive sample is gone after two half-lives. Each half-life only halves what is left.
