A brief note on Chemical Equations . Read it before a test. Try each question at the end before you open its answer.
The big ideas In a chemical change , new substances form. Signs: a gas, a change of colour, a precipitate, a change of temperature or of state. A chemical equation has the reactants on the left, the products on the right, and an arrow that means gives. State symbols: ( s ) (s) ( s ) solid, ( l ) (l) ( l ) liquid, ( g ) (g) ( g ) gas, ( a q ) (aq) ( a q ) dissolved in water. Conditions such as heat or light go over the arrow. Balance with the numbers in front only. Never change a formula. Counting atoms Written Means H 2 O \text{H}_2\text{O} H 2 O 2 2 2 H and 1 1 1 O in one molecule 3 H 2 O 3\text{H}_2\text{O} 3 H 2 O three molecules: 6 6 6 H and 3 3 3 O Mg(NO 3 ) 2 \text{Mg(NO}_3)_2 Mg(NO 3 ) 2 1 1 1 Mg, 2 2 2 N and 6 6 6 O
A worked example Balance Fe 2 O 3 + C → Fe + CO \text{Fe}_2\text{O}_3 + \text{C} \rightarrow \text{Fe} + \text{CO} Fe 2 O 3 + C → Fe + CO .
Iron. 2 2 2 on the left, so 2 Fe 2\text{Fe} 2 Fe . Oxygen. 3 3 3 on the left, so 3 CO 3\text{CO} 3 CO . Carbon. Now 3 3 3 on the right, so 3 C 3\text{C} 3 C . Count. Fe 2 O 3 + 3 C → 2 Fe + 3 CO \text{Fe}_2\text{O}_3 + 3\text{C} \rightarrow 2\text{Fe} + 3\text{CO} Fe 2 O 3 + 3 C → 2 Fe + 3 CO : Fe 2 = 2 2 = 2 2 = 2 , O 3 = 3 3 = 3 3 = 3 , C 3 = 3 3 = 3 3 = 3 . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program counts the atoms in three formulas, with brackets and with numbers in front.
Read it, then run it. How many atoms are there in 2 Mg(NO 3 ) 2 2\,\text{Mg(NO}_3)_2 2 Mg(NO 3 ) 2 ?
1. Add (4, "Ca(OH)2") to the list. How many hydrogen atoms are there?
Mistakes to avoid Changing a formula to balance , such as writing H 2 O 2 \text{H}_2\text{O}_2 H 2 O 2 for water. Writing oxygen as O instead of O 2 \text{O}_2 O 2 . Forgetting the bracket. The number after it multiplies everything inside. Taking melting for a reaction. A change of state alone makes nothing new.
