Four types Type Pattern Example Combination A + B → AB \text{A} + \text{B} \rightarrow \text{AB} A + B → AB C + O 2 → CO 2 \text{C} + \text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{CO}_2 C + O 2 → CO 2 Decomposition AB → A + B \text{AB} \rightarrow \text{A} + \text{B} AB → A + B 2 HgO → 2 Hg + O 2 2\text{HgO} \rightarrow 2\text{Hg} + \text{O}_2 2 HgO → 2 Hg + O 2 Displacement A + BC → AC + B \text{A} + \text{BC} \rightarrow \text{AC} + \text{B} A + BC → AC + B Mg + FeSO 4 → MgSO 4 + Fe \text{Mg} + \text{FeSO}_4 \rightarrow \text{MgSO}_4 + \text{Fe} Mg + FeSO 4 → MgSO 4 + Fe Double displacement AB + CD → AD + CB \text{AB} + \text{CD} \rightarrow \text{AD} + \text{CB} AB + CD → AD + CB KCl + AgNO 3 → AgCl + KNO 3 \text{KCl} + \text{AgNO}_3 \rightarrow \text{AgCl} + \text{KNO}_3 KCl + AgNO 3 → AgCl + KNO 3
Decomposition needs heat, light or electricity.
The reactivity series K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al, Zn, Fe, Pb, (H), Cu, Hg, Ag, Au. A metal displaces only the metals below it.
Oxidation and reduction Oxidation: gain of oxygen or loss of hydrogen. Reduction: loss of oxygen or gain of hydrogen. They happen together, in a redox reaction. The oxidising agent is itself reduced; the reducing agent is itself oxidised. A worked example Zinc is put in silver nitrate solution: Zn + 2 AgNO 3 → Zn(NO 3 ) 2 + 2 Ag \text{Zn} + 2\text{AgNO}_3 \rightarrow \text{Zn(NO}_3)_2 + 2\text{Ag} Zn + 2 AgNO 3 → Zn(NO 3 ) 2 + 2 Ag . Name the type, and find the silver from 6.5 g 6.5\ \text{g} 6.5 g of zinc. Use Zn = 65 \text{Zn} = 65 Zn = 65 and Ag = 108 \text{Ag} = 108 Ag = 108 .
Type. Zinc is above silver, so it displaces it: a displacement. Moles of zinc. 6.5 g 65 g/mol = 0.1 mol \dfrac{6.5\ \text{g}}{65\ \text{g/mol}} = 0.1\ \text{mol} 65 g/mol 6.5 g = 0.1 mol . Silver. The ratio is 1 : 2 1 : 2 1 : 2 , so 0.2 mol × 108 g/mol = 21.6 g 0.2\ \text{mol} \times 108\ \text{g/mol} = 21.6\ \text{g} 0.2 mol × 108 g/mol = 21.6 g . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program checks four pairs of metals against the reactivity series.
Read it, then run it. Which pairs give no reaction?
1. Add the pair ("Al", "Cu"). Does aluminium displace copper?
Mistakes to avoid Calling every swap a displacement. If two compounds swap partners, it is a double displacement. Reading the reactivity series upside down. The higher metal displaces the lower one. Mixing up the agent and what happens to it. The oxidising agent is reduced. Forgetting that oxidation and reduction go together.
