The big ideas The dimensions of a quantity are the powers of [ M ] [\text{M}] [ M ] , [ L ] [\text{L}] [ L ] , [ T ] [\text{T}] [ T ] in it: a force is [ M L T − 2 ] [\text{M}\,\text{L}\,\text{T}^{-2}] [ M L T − 2 ] . Find them from any formula: multiplying adds powers, dividing subtracts them, pure numbers have none. Homogeneity : every term of a correct equation has the same dimensions; the argument of sin, cos, log or e e e is a pure number. Deriving : write the answer as k a x b y c z k\,a^{x}b^{y}c^{z} k a x b y c z and match M, L and T. Changing units : n 2 = n 1 ( M 1 / M 2 ) a ( L 1 / L 2 ) b ( T 1 / T 2 ) c n_2 = n_1 (M_1/M_2)^{a} (L_1/L_2)^{b} (T_1/T_2)^{c} n 2 = n 1 ( M 1 / M 2 ) a ( L 1 / L 2 ) b ( T 1 / T 2 ) c . Limits : no pure numbers, no sums, no functions, at most three unknown powers in mechanics. Dimensions at a glance Quantity Dimensions Velocity, acceleration [ L T − 1 ] [\text{L}\,\text{T}^{-1}] [ L T − 1 ] , [ L T − 2 ] [\text{L}\,\text{T}^{-2}] [ L T − 2 ] Force, momentum [ M L T − 2 ] [\text{M}\,\text{L}\,\text{T}^{-2}] [ M L T − 2 ] , [ M L T − 1 ] [\text{M}\,\text{L}\,\text{T}^{-1}] [ M L T − 1 ] Work, energy, torque [ M L 2 T − 2 ] [\text{M}\,\text{L}^2\,\text{T}^{-2}] [ M L 2 T − 2 ] Power [ M L 2 T − 3 ] [\text{M}\,\text{L}^2\,\text{T}^{-3}] [ M L 2 T − 3 ] Pressure, stress [ M L − 1 T − 2 ] [\text{M}\,\text{L}^{-1}\,\text{T}^{-2}] [ M L − 1 T − 2 ] Strain, angle, refractive index none
A worked example The pressure at a depth h h h in a liquid might depend on its density ρ \rho ρ , g g g and h h h . Find the form.
p = k ρ x g y h z p = k\,\rho^{x}g^{y}h^{z} p = k ρ x g y h z : [ M L − 1 T − 2 ] = [ M L − 3 ] x [ L T − 2 ] y [ L ] z [\text{M}\,\text{L}^{-1}\,\text{T}^{-2}] = [\text{M}\,\text{L}^{-3}]^{x}[\text{L}\,\text{T}^{-2}]^{y}[\text{L}]^{z} [ M L − 1 T − 2 ] = [ M L − 3 ] x [ L T − 2 ] y [ L ] z . M: x = 1 x = 1 x = 1 . T: − 2 = − 2 y -2 = -2y − 2 = − 2 y , so y = 1 y = 1 y = 1 . L: − 1 = − 3 + 1 + z -1 = -3 + 1 + z − 1 = − 3 + 1 + z , so z = 1 z = 1 z = 1 . So p = k ρ g h p = k\rho g h p = k ρ g h ; experiment gives k = 1 k = 1 k = 1 . Practice with new numbers
A program to try The program checks an equation term by term, and catches a wrong one.
Run it. Which equation fails, and in which power?
Add a check for 1 2 ρ v 2 \frac{1}{2}\rho v^2 2 1 ρ v 2 against a pressure. Does it pass?
Mistakes to avoid Thinking every constant is a pure number. G G G and h h h have dimensions. Forgetting that only like terms add. In A + B t A + Bt A + B t , B t Bt B t must have the dimensions of A A A . Trusting a passed check. A right-looking formula can still have a wrong number or sign. Changing units the wrong way round. A bigger unit gives a smaller number. Check yourself What are the dimensions of pressure times volume? Stuck?
