The adiabatic process
In an adiabatic process no heat flows: the gas is insulated or the change is too quick. Then W=−ΔU, and pVγ

No heat in or out
If a gas is well insulated, or changed so quickly that heat has no time to flow, Q=0. Then the first law gives
W=−ΔU
Work done on the gas raises its temperature; work done by it lowers its temperature. Pump a bicycle tyre hard and the pump warms; let a can of spray out fast and it cools.
The adiabatic laws
For an ideal gas changing slowly enough to stay in balance but with no heat flow:
pVγ=constant,TVγ−1=constant
and the work done by it is W=nCv(T1−T2)=γ−1p1V1−p2V2.
You should find that the adiabatic pressure falls faster, because the gas also cools, and that the gap grows with γ.
A graph of pressure against volume for the expansion of a gas from the same starting point to the same final volume, along an isothermal curve and along an adiabatic curve. The adiabatic curve falls more steeply, and it ends at a lower pressure. The area under the isothermal curve is larger than the area under the adiabatic curve, so the gas does more work in the isothermal expansion. The temperature stays the same on the isotherm and falls on the adiabat.
Watch out.pVγ, not pV: Boyle's law does not hold when the temperature changes.
A worked example
A diesel engine squeezes air (γ=1.40) at 300K and 1.0atm quickly to 181 of its volume. Find the new temperature and pressure.
Temperature.T2=300K×180.40=953K, about 680∘C.
Pressure.p2=1.0atm×181.40=57atm.
So the air is hot enough to light the fuel sprayed into it, with no spark plug.
Practise with new numbers
Try it in Python
The program works out the diesel engine of the example.
Remember these
Adiabatic: Q=0, W=−ΔU=nCv(T1−T2).
pVγ and TVγ−1 are constant.
Squeezed: warms. Expands: cools. Adiabats are steeper than isotherms.

stay the same. A gas squeezed adiabatically warms, as in a diesel engine; one that expands adiabatically cools. On a pressure-volume graph an adiabat is steeper than an isotherm.
