Course 1.2Lesson 3 of 4
Adding a number outside f moves the graph up or down. Changing x inside f moves or squeezes it sideways, and the effect is the opposite of what you may expect. A factor outside stretches the graph up or down. A minus sign outside flips it in the x axis, and a minus sign inside flips it in the y axis.
Try the code and the simulations beside the lesson.
Once you know the graph of , you can draw many other graphs without a table of values. A small change in the formula moves, stretches or flips the same picture. This saves a great deal of work.
In the picture, the dashed grey curve is . Each blue curve is a change of it.
These change the height of each point, so they do exactly what you expect.
| New graph | What happens to the graph of |
|---|---|
| moves up by (down if is negative) | |
| , with | stretches upward: every height is multiplied by |
| , with | squeezes toward the axis |
| flips over the axis |
These change the input before sees it. They work sideways, and the effect is the opposite of what the sign suggests.
| New graph | What happens to the graph of |
|---|---|
| moves right by (left if is negative) | |
| , with | squeezes sideways: every is divided by |
| , with | stretches sideways |
| flips over the axis |
Why right? The graph of gives at the value that gave at . So every point has moved units to the right. In the same way, at gives the value that gave at , so the picture has been squeezed to half the width.
Set . The parabola turns upside down about its vertex, which stays at .
For , work in this order. First the changes inside: scale by , then move by . Then the changes outside: scale by , then move by .
A point moves too. A point on the graph of becomes the point on the new graph. For , the point goes to .
Example 1. Draw . Start from . Replace by : the graph moves units to the left. Subtract : it moves units down. The vertex goes from to . The domain is and the range is .
Example 2. Draw . Start from . Replace by : move to the right. Multiply by : stretch upward. Add : move up. The starting point goes to . The domain is and the range is .
Example 3. The graph of . Start from and move it units to the right. The point of the "V" is now at . The right arm of the "V" starts there, and the left arm comes from the axis at .
This program draws and three changes of it on one picture.
Try each one on your own first. If you are stuck, open a hint. Then check with Show the answer.
