Course 1.2Lesson 4 of 4
A function is even if f(−x) = f(x) for every x, and then its graph is symmetric about the y axis. It is odd if f(−x) = −f(x), and then its graph is symmetric about the origin. A function is increasing on an interval if a larger x always gives a larger f(x), and decreasing if a larger x gives a smaller f(x). A function is periodic with period T if f(x + T) = f(x).
Try the code and the simulations beside the lesson.
Look at your face in a mirror. The left side matches the right. Some graphs have this kind of symmetry too, and it saves you work: you draw one half, and the other half comes free.
A function is even if
The graph of an even function is symmetric about the axis. Examples: , , and .
A function is odd if
The graph of an odd function is symmetric about the origin: if you turn it half a turn about the origin, it falls on itself. Examples: , , and .
Many functions are neither, such as in the third picture.
For the test, the domain must be symmetric, which means that if is in the domain, then is also in it. Then find and compare it with .
Example. . Then . So is odd.
Example. . Then . This is not , and it is not . So is neither even nor odd. To prove it, one value is enough: , , and is neither nor .
Useful rules. Even even is even. Odd odd is odd. Even even is even. Odd odd is even. Even odd is odd. An odd function that is defined at has . Only the zero function is both even and odd.
Every function splits. If the domain is symmetric, then
For example, is the even function plus the odd function .
Set and : the two curves are mirror images through the origin, so is odd. Set : they lie on top of each other, so is even.
A function is increasing on an interval if, for any two points in it, . Going to the right, the graph goes up. It is decreasing if gives , and the graph goes down.
The graph of is increasing for , decreasing for and increasing again for . The points where the direction changes, here and , are the turning points. At a turning point, the function has a highest or lowest value in its neighbourhood.
Example. . Completing the square, . For , a larger makes smaller, so decreases. For , it increases. The turning point is the vertex, .
A function is periodic if its values repeat. It has period if for every , with , and is the smallest such number. The fractional part has period . The functions and , which you will meet soon, have period . If has period , then has period . So has period .
Python cannot prove that a function is even, but it can test many values of . This program tests five functions.
Try each one on your own first. If you are stuck, open a hint. Then check with Show the answer.
