Excess silver powder is shaken at 298 K with a solution of iron(III) perchlorate, [Fe3+]=0.100 mol L−1, in dilute perchloric acid. The acid stops the iron(III) ions from hydrolysing, and perchlorate does not react. The reaction is Ag(s)+Fe3+(aq)⇌Ag+(aq)+Fe2+(aq). At the start there are no Ag+ or Fe2+ ions. Take E∘(Fe3+/Fe2+)=0.77 V, E∘(Ag+/Ag)=0.80 V and F2.303RT=0.059 V. Treat the solution as ideal, and take its volume as fixed. The mixture is left until it reaches equilibrium. What is [Ag+] at equilibrium? Give the answer in mmol L−1, to two decimal places.
