Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
The mains has a frequency of Hz and an rms voltage of V. At the voltage is zero and rising. How long after that does the voltage first equal V? How long until it first equals half of its peak value?
An AC voltage is , with and . The rms values are and . The average power in a resistor is . For any waveform, the rms value is the root of the mean of the square.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The peak value. V.
Step 2. The rms voltage. We want V, so . That is . This is of the period, so ms.
Step 3. Half of the peak. Now , so . This is of the period, so ms.
Answer: ms and ms.
Watch out. The voltage does not stay at its rms value. It only passes through it, at and at three other points of each cycle.
