Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
The figure shows the curve , with two points marked: , which lies on the curve, and , which does not. The curve has a local maximum at and a local minimum at .
A tangent to a cubic curve usually meets the curve once more, at a second point. Start from the tangent at the point of the curve where , and find where it meets the curve again: this one result answers the first three parts. Then turn the question round and ask which tangents pass through a given point that is not on the curve.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
The key fact. The tangent at is . Then . The double root is the point of contact, and the tangent meets the curve again where .
(a) For , : has . (The tangent at is the line , and indeed .)
(b) For , : has . The slope there is , and the tangent at is , which meets the curve again at .
(c) The tangent at passes through when . With : , that is , so or . Three real values of give three different tangents (a line cannot touch a cubic at two points, since that would need four meetings counted with multiplicity). So 3 tangents. One of them is the tangent at itself, the line , which passes through .
(d) The slopes are : for , and . The greatest is .
(e) Let . Then : a local minimum and a local maximum , with as and as . The equation has three real roots exactly when . So and . At or two of the tangents merge, and only two remain.
Check. numpy's roots of for give 3, 3, 1 and 1 real values of , as the interval says. Also is not on the curve: .
