Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A skydiver falls with the quadratic drag , where m/s and the terminal speed is m/s. Use solve_ivp with an event to find the time when the speed first reaches 99 percent of the terminal speed. The exact solution is , which gives the time .
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Plan. The event function is , which becomes zero at the moment we want. It is terminal, and the direction is , because the speed rises through the value.
Check. The function np.arctanh(0.99) is 2.6467, so the exact time is s. The solution agrees. Notice how long it takes to get near the terminal speed: more than 13 seconds, and the skydiver falls hundreds of metres in the meantime.
Answer: 13.50 s.
