Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
The drag constant is , so for a ball of the same size and shape, it is inversely proportional to the mass. The baseball of 0.145 kg has per metre. A ball of the same size and shape with a mass of 1.0 kg has . Find the range of both, thrown at 40 m/s and 45 degrees.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Plan. Use the function flight of the lesson, or write the same rate function, and the event for the landing.
Check. The light ball has and goes 82.5 m. The heavy ball has and goes 140.8 m. Without any air, the range would be 163.3 m. The heavy ball is slowed down less, so it goes much farther.
Answer: 82.5 m for the baseball, and 140.8 m for the heavy ball.
