Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Say which substance is oxidised and which is reduced, using the classical ideas of oxygen, hydrogen and electronegative elements: (a) ; (b) ; (c) ; (d) .
Classical definitions. Oxidation: addition of oxygen or an electronegative element, or removal of hydrogen or an electropositive element. Reduction: the opposite. Both happen together in one reaction.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a). loses oxygen, so it is reduced. gains oxygen, so it is oxidised.
Step 2. (b). Aluminium gains sulfur, an electronegative element, so it is oxidised. Sulfur gains an electropositive element, so it is reduced.
Step 3. (c). loses hydrogen, so it is oxidised. gains hydrogen, so it is reduced.
Step 4. (d). loses chlorine, an electronegative element, so it is reduced. gains chlorine, so it is oxidised.
Answer: (a) CuO reduced, oxidised; (b) Al oxidised, S reduced; (c) oxidised, reduced; (d) reduced, oxidised.
