Say whether each statement is about mitosis, meiosis, or both…

StemPy LabContributed by StemPy Lab

Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

Say whether each statement is about mitosis, meiosis, or both.

  1. Four cells are formed from one.
  1. Homologous chromosomes pair in prophase.
  1. A young leaf grows.
  1. The daughter cells are identical to the parent cell.
  1. Sperm are formed in the testis.
  1. The DNA is copied once.

Mitosis gives two identical diploid cells. Meiosis gives four haploid cells that differ. A cell with nnn pairs of homologues makes 2n2^n2n kinds of gamete by independent assortment. Non-disjunction gives gametes with n+1n + 1n+1 or n−1n - 1n−1 chromosomes.

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

Step 1. (a) Meiosis.

Step 2. (b) Meiosis.

Step 3. (c) Mitosis.

Step 4. (d) Mitosis.

Step 5. (e) Meiosis.

Step 6. (f) Both. The DNA is copied once before mitosis, and once before the two divisions of meiosis.

Answer: (a) meiosis; (b) meiosis; (c) mitosis; (d) mitosis; (e) meiosis; (f) both.
