Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A cell has chromosomes and C of DNA in G1.
Count the centromeres for the chromosomes and the DNA molecules for the chromatids. The mitotic index is the cells in mitosis divided by all the cells, times . The time of a phase is the share of the cells in it times the length of the cycle. One cell gives cells in cycles, and divisions take place in going from to cells.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Given. , C.
Plan. Use the three counting rules of the lesson.
Step 1. G2. chromatids.
Step 2. Anaphase. The chromatids are chromosomes now: chromosomes.
Step 3. DNA at anaphase. No cell has divided yet, so the DNA is C.
Step 4. A daughter cell. chromosomes and C.
Step 5. A gamete. chromosomes, and C of DNA.
Answer: ; ; C; ; .
Check. The two daughter cells hold C, the same as the cell before it divided.
