A scatter plot of the first 36 elements colours each point by block with df["block"].map(colours). How many points are green, the colour of the d-block, and why does that stretch of the plot look flat?

First ionisation enthalpy peaks at the noble gases and falls to its lowest at the alkali metals that follow. Across a period the atomic radius falls, because the nuclear charge grows while the shell stays the same; down a group it rises, because a shell is added. diff() gives each value minus the one before.

Step 1. Count. Scandium (Z ) to zinc (Z ): elements.
Step 2. Shape. Each added electron goes into the inner 3d orbitals. The outer 4s electrons feel almost the same pull, so the first ionisation enthalpy hardly changes.
Answer: green points, on a low, nearly flat stretch.
