Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
From gallium to krypton the first ionisation enthalpies are , , , , and kJ/mol. Which element breaks the rise, by how much, and why does that element fall below the one before?
df.groupby("block")["ie"].mean() gives the mean of each block. df["a"].corr(df["b"]) gives the correlation , from to . df.groupby("period")["ie"].diff() gives the change from the element before, inside each period; a negative value is a break in the rise.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The changes. , , , and kJ/mol.
Step 2. The break. Selenium, kJ/mol below arsenic.
Step 3. Why. Arsenic has a half-filled 4p set. Selenium's fourth 4p electron must pair up, and the repulsion makes it easier to remove, just as oxygen falls below nitrogen.
Answer: selenium, a drop of kJ/mol, from the pairing of its fourth 4p electron.
