Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Match each scientist to the step he added to our picture of the cell.
The steps: naming cells; finding the nucleus; showing that animals are made of cells; showing that cells come from cells.
The cell theory: Schleiden (plants, 1838) and Schwann (animals, 1839) said that living things are made of cells; Virchow (1855) added that every cell comes from a cell. Hooke named cells, Leeuwenhoek first saw live cells and Brown found the nucleus. Image width equals real width times the magnification; 1000 µm make 1 mm.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) Brown found the nucleus.
Step 2. (b) Schwann showed that animals are made of cells, and that the cell wall is unique to plants.
Step 3. (c) Virchow showed that cells come from cells.
Step 4. (d) Hooke named cells, after the boxes he saw in cork.
Answer: (a) the nucleus; (b) animal cells; (c) cells from cells; (d) naming cells.
