Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
Four chromosomes have these arms, in µm. P: and . Q: and . R: and . S: no short arm and . Name each kind of chromosome, and say where its centromere lies.
The nuclear envelope has two membranes and pores. Nucleoli have no membrane and make rRNA. Chromatin is DNA, histones, non-histone proteins and RNA. The centromere sits in the middle (metacentric), a little off the middle (sub-metacentric), near one end (acrocentric) or at the end (telocentric).
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. P. The arms are nearly equal, so the centromere is in the middle: metacentric.
Step 2. Q. One arm is clearly shorter, so the centromere is a little away from the middle: sub-metacentric.
Step 3. R. One arm is extremely short, so the centromere is close to one end: acrocentric.
Step 4. S. There is no short arm, so the centromere is at the end: telocentric.
Answer: P metacentric, Q sub-metacentric, R acrocentric, S telocentric.
