Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.

In a lab culture, about 111 in 500500500 new cells carries a small change in its DNA. Neha counts 12 00012\,00012000 new cells under the microscope. About how many of them carry a change? About how many are copies with no change?

Check your answer

Work it out on paper, then type your number. The answer itself stays hidden.

Reproduction makes new individuals of the same kind. Its basic event is the copying of DNA, which is never perfect, so the copies differ a little. These variations help a species to survive when its niche changes.

The worked solution

Have you tried it?

Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.

Step 1. With a change. 12 000500=24\dfrac{12\,000}{500} = 2450012000=24 cells.

Step 2. With no change. 12 000−24=11 97612\,000 - 24 = 11\,97612000−24=11976 cells.

Answer: about 242424 cells carry a change, and about 11 97611\,97611976 do not.
