Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
For each cell, name the tissue it belongs to, and say whether it is living or dead at maturity.
Xylem carries water and minerals: tracheids, vessels, xylem fibres (dead) and xylem parenchyma (living). Phloem carries food: sieve tube elements, companion cells, phloem parenchyma (living) and phloem fibres (dead). In a stem the protoxylem lies towards the centre (endarch); in a root it lies towards the outside (exarch).
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) Vessel member: xylem, dead.
Step 2. (b) Companion cell: phloem, living.
Step 3. (c) Tracheid: xylem, dead.
Step 4. (d) Phloem fibre: phloem, dead.
Answer: (a) xylem, dead; (b) phloem, living; (c) xylem, dead; (d) phloem, dead.
