Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A vessel in the wood of a tree is made of vessel members joined end to end. Each member is mm long.
Xylem carries water and minerals: tracheids, vessels, xylem fibres (dead) and xylem parenchyma (living). Phloem carries food: sieve tube elements, companion cells, phloem parenchyma (living) and phloem fibres (dead). In a stem the protoxylem lies towards the centre (endarch); in a root it lies towards the outside (exarch).
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. Length. mm.
Step 2. Members. cm mm, and members.
Step 3. Why the water flows. The members are dead and have no cytoplasm, and the cross walls have perforations, so the vessel is one open tube.
Answer: mm; members; it is an open tube with no cell contents.
