Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
The windpipe is lined with ciliated columnar epithelium. What do the cilia do? What may happen to a person who smokes, and so damages the cilia?
Epithelium covers and lines. Squamous: flat. Cuboidal: cube. Columnar: tall. Ciliated: with cilia that sweep mucus.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, compare your working with the solution.
Step 1. The cilia. They beat and sweep mucus, with the dust and germs it has trapped, up and out of the air passages.
Step 2. Smoking. Damaged cilia cannot clear the mucus, so dust and germs stay in the lungs. The person coughs more and catches lung infections more easily.
