A bucket of mass stands on a table. The table top is above the floor, and the floor is above the ground outside. ()
- Find the potential energy of the bucket measured from the floor.
- Find it measured from the ground outside.
- The bucket is lifted onto a shelf above the floor. By how much does its potential energy grow? Is the answer the same from both levels?
Need a reminder? The key ideaShow
Potential energy , with measured from a level we choose. The change in between two heights is the same from any level, and it does not depend on the path.
The worked solution
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. (a) : .
Step 2. (b) : .
Step 3. (c) It rises : the gain is , from either level.
Answer: ; ; , the same from both levels.
