Try it on paper first. A hint, the key idea and the worked solution are here when you need them.
A student describes a roadside plant, but writes the lines in a jumbled order: fruit and seed, leaf, habit, flower, root, inflorescence, stem, floral formula. Write the lines in the correct order, and say which lines are vegetative characters and which are floral characters.
A plant is described in a fixed order: habit, root, stem, leaf (the vegetative characters), then inflorescence, flower, fruit and seed (the floral characters), and last the floral diagram and the floral formula. The flower is described whorl by whorl: calyx, corolla, androecium, gynoecium.
Have you tried it?
Work it out on paper first. It is fine to get stuck or make a mistake: that is how we learn. When you are ready, go through the solution one step at a time, and check each step against your own.
Step 1. The order. Habit, root, stem, leaf, inflorescence, flower, fruit and seed, floral formula.
Step 2. Vegetative characters. Habit, root, stem and leaf.
Step 3. Floral characters. Inflorescence, flower, fruit and seed.
Step 4. The last line. The floral formula sums up the flower, so it comes at the end.
Answer: habit, root, stem, leaf, inflorescence, flower, fruit and seed, formula. The first four are vegetative and the next three are floral.
